I've never been one to have a New Year's resolution - I always thought they were worthless. But, this year I've decided to come up with some "goals". I don't know why, but I like that word better, and by blogging about it, I have a permanent record about it as well. Here they are (in no particular order) - if you have any advice on the topics I bring up please feel free to send me you $0.02:
Learn About Parenting I will be a father in less than three months. I realize that nobody knows everything about parenting. I realize you get instant "on-the-job" training. But I realized over the holidays that I know nothing about raising a kid, so I will be doing a lot of reading on this subject before March.
Get the Baby Room Done We need furniture, I need to paint it, we need other baby-related things, etc., etc.
Build a Deck I really want to build a deck this summer. This may end up as an exercise in frustration, but I have to try. Hopefully I can lure some friends over who have done this before so I can do it as "right" as I can. I'm not handy with tools, but I want to learn. My long-term schedule is to finish the other half of our lower-level during the 2006 year so I can have an office downstairs. Once that's done, the house will be completely finished and I won't have to think about big building projects. But the first thing is a deck.
Stop Swearing I'm not too thrilled about this, but Liz asked me to cut down on it. Not that she's offended by it, but, well, I don't want the first word from my son to be "shit" or "fuck", especially in front of the grandparents either. Therefore, I'm going to try and cut down (but I also held Liz to this as well as she's not the "cleanest" at swearing either).
Lose Some Weight I don't know what happened this year, but I've slowly inched up to 203 pounds. That's not good. I've exercised three times a week, but I need to revisit my eating habits and make better decisions in the next year. The goal is to be down to 195 by March and 185 by the end of the year. Ultimately, the goal is to "feel" healthy and not necessarily hit a target weight, but right now I don't "feel" the best physically and I need to change that.
Add Commenting to my Blog This is high on the list. I have to add this before March, no ifs, ands, or buts.
Do a Couple of Speaking Engagements I have one presentation on localization in .NET in February and I may repeat it in April. That's probably it for speaking - I don't want to commit to a lot until I know what it's like having a baby in the house.
Add More to .NET Langauges This site has become dormant other than site's blog linking to other blogs. That's not acceptable. I will be ramping it up over the next 2-3 months.
Blog About Some Topics in the Can I have a list of about 5-10 topics that I want to blog about. I want to get them done soon.
Update my Blogging Tool My home-grown blogging tool needs some updates. Nothing major, just things I've noticed that I could add to make my blogging life even easier.
Learn More About Finances I want to stay ahead of things financially. Having a kid will tighten our budget somewhat, and I don't want to end up going in debt up to my eyeballs. We're currently doing fine, but we haven't been very tight about spending either, and that will have to change.
Get a Bigger Car Sigh...I don't want to get a new vehicle, but I've grudgingly come to accept that we will need a bigger car once our baby arrives. I don't want to get a gas-sucking SUV, but I'll be looking around over the next year. We probably won't need it until the end of the year, though, so I have time to do some research.
