Thinking About the Future
I just had my yearly review at Magenic. Overall, I'm happy with my compensation (although I could always have more money ;) ). However, after talking to guy who went through my review about what I'm going to focus on for the next year, I started to realize that a nagging thought that's cropped up on my blog before is coming to a head, and that is, "What do I want to do with the rest of my career?"
So far, I think I've made some good choices in terms of the work I've done and the jobs I've pursued (although I have made some real big mistakes in that area :( ). But, as much as I love to program, the older I get, the less I'm going to be cranking out code. My latest position is being the technical lead on the project, and that's a first for me. I'll be leading the architecture and design efforts, and I'm sure I'll code (!), but I have the feeling my soft skills will be used a lot more for this gig. Furthermore, I want to continue writing and speaking (the latter is something I enjoy, but I know I need to tune some areas in that), but I feel that I haven't done as much of that (especially the speaking part) as I'd like to. All of this is making me excited and leery at the same time.
Basically, I'm in my early 30s, and I want to make sure I keep moving ahead in my career, not backwards or stuck in the same rut. I think I need to stop playing XBox all night and start doing some nighttime work like I used to (well, not every night - Long Beach just got added to PGR2 so there are more tracks and cars to master (like the Radical, which is sweeeeet!)).
